Experience

  • 1996–present: Self-employed maritime/boating safety consultant and marine surveyor. Consultant on maritime/boating safety, accidents and damage claims, dredging, aids to navigation, and waterfront facilities. Marine surveyor for small craft, yachts, commercial vessels, hull & machinery, cargo and containers. Instructor for American Boat & Yacht Council certification courses.
  • 1996–2000: Adjunct instructor, California Maritime Academy, Vallejo, CA. Instructor in seamanship, navigation, watchstanding, water survival, Coast Guard requirements and STCW qualifications, (engineering and deck), marine engineering, electricity, electronics and communications.
  • 1995–1996: Project Manager/Senior Engineer, Moffatt & Nichol Eng, Walnut Creek, CA. Planned and managed waterfront and maritime projects on San Francisco Bay, the Sacramento River, and California and Nevada reservoirs and lakes. Projects involved boating, vessel traffic management, regulatory markers, aids to navigation, boating safety, dredging, waterfront facilities, environmental compliance, and waterways issues and management.
  • 1971–1995: Officer, US Army/US Coast Guard. Engineer and Deck Watch Officer. As Naval Engineer, was Chief, Icebreaker and Coastal Buoy Tender type desk. Responsible for engineering and changes to ships systems. Deck Watch Officer on a large cutter performing marine safety, fisheries, drug enforcement and search and rescue missions.
